Bookies William Hill now makes Damson Idris amongst the favourites to be awarded the vacant James Bond role – though he was only added to the betting two days ago.

The criminally handsome, Peckham-born Snowfall star, 31 is now second favourite for the coveted role of the iconic British spy franchise, seemingly coming out of nowhere in the odds.

Aaron Taylor-Johnson remains the 6/4 favourite to assume the vacancy left by Daniel Craig, with Ex-Bridgerton star Rege-Jean Page (3/1) and James Norton (7/2) also amongst the frontrunners.

Can Damson could take on such a culturally significant role?

Hell, yeah – and sorry, Idris Elba (the British-Ghanian actor has also been heavily rumoured for the part in recent years) – age and, er, energy wise, Damson is definitely in a better position to take on the stunt-heavy role and get at least a few films out of it.

Back in March, Damson said in an interview, ‘Honestly, I credit [Bond rumours] to Idris Elba probably. It’s my last name. So I got to give him those flowers. ‘Oh, let’s get baby Idris if we can’t get big Idris.”‘

He went on, ‘I think people are just really encouraged by strong Black male leads. And it’s almost a compliment and a rite of passage really to be held to the esteem of some of these characters. ‘Oh, man, you are tall, Black, handsome, and people gravitate to you, you should play James Bond … you should play this, you should play that.’’

The rising star has certainly proved his chops as an actor, until recently playing the magnetic Franklin Saint in FX original series, Snowfall – the 19-year-old convenience store clerk who rose to become South Central LA’s notorious drug kingpin and patriarch of the Family.

But there have been other parts of note, too – such as his incredibly powerful turn in Farming,

the stirring indie film based on writer/director, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje’s own childhood, telling the story of a young Nigerian boy, ‘farmed out’ by his parents to a white British family in the hope of a better future. Instead, he becomes the feared leader of a white skinhead gang.

Damson’s stunning performance in Farming brought him much acclaim

Damson also, let’s be honest, oozes that easy charm that has women week at the knees, another pre-requisite for Bond. And as anyone that follows the fashion lover’s Instagram or has seen any of his many magazine cover shoots will know, Damson – who grew up in Peckham, South London to a Nigerian mother – sure knows how to scrub up in a suit, too.

He’s got our vote, anyway (right, ladies?)…
